Chi Based Fitness
Chi? “God bless you. Oh, I thought you sneezed.” No, I said Chi. Chi is like universal energy. It is all around us. We breathe it. We take in through our pores. It is electromagnetic and it runs in, around and through our bodies. The ancient art of Qigong (pronounced chee-gong) is said to be the skilled practice of gathering this universal life force called Chi.
Physical fitness is great for your health, but maybe you are not into running or aerobics. Maybe you are into these exercises, but you are looking for something different in the new year. I was an athlete in middle school and high school right up until I had an accident that caused me to develop a degenerative spinal disease. The doctors told me that I would be crippled by the time I was thirty years old.
I used Qigong as a means to heal my spine, change my outlook on life, stay centered and stay in shape.
Now I enjoy the fitness of all kinds, including running, biking, swimming, martial arts and more. If it wasn’t for Qigong, I would not have healed my spinal disease and would not have the energy to go to the gym.
There are more styles of Qigong than there are martial arts, so not all forms of Qigong are the same. My style of Qigong combines martial arts type movements (slowed down) and meditation stillness postures with a conscious breathing practice.
These practices bring about a type of experience that, I think, is unique when it comes to fitness. I have experienced these types of feelings only in Qigong, Yoga, Meditation and certain types of Martial Arts.
